Lots of people are feeling the stress of our tough economy — are you? If you are trying to simplify your spending, some of these strategies have worked for me; and could be of help to you as well:

1. Question your purchases:
I usually ask myself many questions before making a purchase to be sure I am not buying something I might never get to use. Or making a purchase based on my current mood. My three guiding questions are: Do I really need it? Do I love it? Do I have to have it right now? If the score is 100%, then I get to pay for the item.
2. Make a list and stick to it:
I have noticed that the times I walk into a grocery store without a list, I end up buying many useless items or even buying stuff that I already have simply because I forgot that I do have them. Taking time to make a proper list and following it through actually helps.
3. Be skeptical of “SALE” stickers:
Often stores will only mark an item down by a few pennies and slap a “SALE” sticker to draw your attention. Make sure it’s a good deal before you purchase it.
4. Set goals for the amount of money you want to save:
I usually make a budget at the start of each month and I am proud of myself for sticking to it most of the times. It was a tag of war for me at the start but with time my brain reset.
5. Don’t shop when you’re hungry:
I usually buy all foods in extras if I go shopping when I’m hungry. This also applies for the non-food items. There is a way hunger sends wrong impulses to peoples’ wallets during shopping…only to get home and realize you over estimated all purchased portions.
6. Don’t make shopping a reward or a hobby:
It’s easier for me to over spend when I’m “rewarding” myself for accomplishments. I found better ways of congratulating myself without spending much or by using what I already have.
7. Stay out of stores:
If you don’t shop, you won’t buy!
What tips for saving more and spending less could you add to this list? Let’s keep it growing!
