Mom hat, Wife hat or both?

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a mom and was anxious about kids when I married my husband. On the other hand, Godwin had never really spent a ton of time around kids. Although he wanted kids, he was in no hurry.

Looking back I am so grateful for the three years we were married before we had our daughter. I have so many wonderful memories of the time when our family was just the two of us. And I think it set a strong foundation for our marriage.

And then the family grew!

I clearly remember the feelings I had after Vona was born. My heart had not only stretched to make room for her, but I also loved my husband more deeply than before. Watching Godwin embrace fatherhood and fall in love with his daughter brought out intense feelings in me.

It’s rather amazing how time flies. The dishes piled up, we got low on sleep, had more responsibilities, more commitments, and the intense feelings began to fade. Being new parents, we had to move back to the drawing board. We re-prioritized many things. And among them was to be intentional about sowing into our relationship as Vona’s parents.
We found that it was easier to be gentle and loving parents if we offered ourselves the same portion first. In that way, the whole family benefits.

Taking off the mom hat to wear the wife hat from time to time is not only a precious gift to yourself but also your children.
We are happily reaping already and we are pretty sure that we will enjoy the dividends of investing in our marriage far into the future.

What is the greatest gift a parent can give their child?
